Prior to this, I was an active real estate broker for many years. But my concerns for the earth, and all the great edibles it creates, helped me change paths. I now work for Whole Foods Markets in the wholesale division, which is located in the San Francisco produce terminal. Whole Foods is a full line market which features healthful, top quality foods. My interest in produce started many years ago in Nono Ferro's back yard garden. My grandfather, like most Italian immigrants of his day, grew most of his family's vegetables in a relatively small but quite productive garden. As a little sprout, I can remember digging through the sandy Alameda soil and finding, amongst the long-forgotten dog bones, the surprise of the day -- red potatoes. I still experience that wonder and amazement in my own garden. That youthful interest lay dormant until 1984, when I dropped a few seeds in that same sandy soil, then prayed. Surprisingly, many of those seeds sprouted and produced fantastic tomatoes, carrots, and snow peas. Organic gardening dovetailed with my generall concern for our good earth, which was nurtured as a Boy Scout. I guess I've always leaned "green." In fact, after high school graduation, my desire was to become a forest ranger. Today, many folks are surprised I gave up a successful real estate career for the opportunity to awaken at 1 a.m., (yes, A.M.) and handle lettuce, beets and exotic mushrooms, but it doesn't surprise me. I realized I'm just an Alameda boy on a mission. Plainly stated, that mission is to grow, promote, and distribute produce, especially organics. |
